What is Zakan 2%

Treating fungal infections. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Zakan 2% is an azole antifungal. It kills sensitive fungi by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell membrane.

Important safety information:

• Zakan 2% may cause dizziness or drowsiness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Zakan 2% with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
• Rarely, Zakan 2% may cause a severe allergic reaction right after you take the first dose. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the eyelids, face, or lips; or rash or hives. If this happens, seek medical care at once.
• Use of alcohol with Zakan 2% has rarely caused symptoms such as flushing, rash, swelling of the hands and feet, nausea, and headache. Do not drink alcohol while taking Zakan 2%.
• Do NOT take more than the recommended dose, stop taking Zakan 2%, or use Zakan 2% for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor.
• Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Zakan 2% before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
• Zakan 2% only works against fungi; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold) or bacterial infections.
• Be sure to use Zakan 2% for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not Zakan 2% up your infection completely. The infection could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.
• Zakan 2% may lower blood testosterone levels. This may lead to decreased sexual ability, enlarged breasts, or low sperm counts. Testosterone levels return to normal after Zakan 2% is stopped. Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor.
• Diabetes patients - Zakan 2% may increase the risk of low blood sugar from your diabetes medicine. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.
• Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Zakan 2%. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).
• LAB TESTS, including liver function tests, may be performed while you use Zakan 2%. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Zakan 2% should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Zakan 2% while you are pregnant. Zakan 2% is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while using Zakan 2%.

How should I take Zakan 2%?

• Zakan 2% comes with an extra patient information sheet called a Medication Guide. Read it carefully. Read it again each time you get Zakan 2% refilled.
• Take Zakan 2% by mouth with or without food.
• Talk with your doctor if you are also taking antacids, an H₂ blocker, or a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) (eg, omeprazole). You may need to take this drug with an acidic drink (eg, nondiet cola).
• Do not take aluminum hydroxide within 1 hour before or 2 hours after you take Zakan 2%.
• To Zakan 2% up your infection completely, take Zakan 2% for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.
• Zakan 2% works best if it is taken at the same time each day.
• If you miss a dose of Zakan 2%, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
