Ferrous gluconate (Ferrous Gluc) has iron in it. Before you start any new medicine, check the label to see if it has iron in it too. If it does or if you are not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Ferrous gluconate (Ferrous Gluc) may cause darkened or green stools. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
Some of these products contain tartrazine dye (FD&C Yellow No. 5). This may cause an allergic reaction in some patients. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to tartrazine, ask your pharmacist if your product has tartrazine in it.
Ferrous gluconate (Ferrous Gluc) may interfere with certain lab tests, including tests used to check for blood in the stool. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Ferrous gluconate (Ferrous Gluc).
Lab tests, including hematocrit, hemoglobin levels, and blood iron levels, may be performed while you use Ferrous gluconate (Ferrous Gluc). These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
Ferrous gluconate (Ferrous Gluc) should not be used in CHILDREN without first checking with the child's doctor; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Ferrous gluconate (Ferrous Gluc) while you are pregnant. Ferrous gluconate (Ferrous Gluc) is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Ferrous gluconate (Ferrous Gluc), check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Constipation; darkened or green stools; diarrhea; loss of appetite; nausea; stomach cramps, pain, or upset; vomiting.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black, tarry stools; blood or streaks of blood in the stool; fever; severe or persistent nausea, stomach pain, or vomiting; vomit that looks like blood or coffee grounds.
