What is Ampicillin (Cloxamast)

Treating infections caused by certain types of bacteria.
Ampicillin (Cloxamast) is a penicillin antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria by interfering with formation of the bacteria's cell wall while it is growing. This weakens the cell wall and it ruptures, resulting in the death of the bacteria.

Important safety information:

• Ampicillin only works against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold).
• Be sure to use Ampicillin (Cloxamast) for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.
• Long-term or repeated use of Ampicillin (Cloxamast) may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.
• If vomiting or diarrhea occurs, you will need to take care not to become dehydrated. Contact your doctor for instructions.
• Mild diarrhea is common with antibiotic use. However, a more serious form of diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis) may rarely occur. This may develop while you use the antibiotic or within several months after you stop using it. Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.
• Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Ampicillin (Cloxamast). To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).

What is Cloxacillin (Cloxamast)

Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) is an antibiotic in the class of drugs called penicillins. It fights bacteria in your body.
Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) is used to treat many different types of infections caused by staphylococcus bacteria ("staph" infections).

Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) side effects

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) and seek emergency medical attention:

• an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of your throat; hives; swelling of your lips, face, or tongue; rash; or fainting);
• seizures;
• severe watery diarrhea and abdominal cramps; or
• unusual bleeding or bruising.

Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) dosing

Usual Adult Dose for Upper Respiratory Tract Infection:

250 mg orally every 6 hours for 7 to 14 days, depending on the nature and severity of the infection.
Maximum dose: 4 g/day.

Usual Adult Dose for Pneumonia:

500 mg orally every 6 hours for up to 21 days, depending on the nature and severity of the infection.
Maximum dose: 4 g/day.

Usual Adult Dose for Skin and Structure Infection:

500 mg orally every 6 hours for 7 days, or until 3 days after acute inflammation resolves, depending on the nature and severity of the infection.
Maximum dose: 4 g/day.

Usual Adult Dose for Cystitis:

250 mg orally every 6 hours for 3 to 7 days, depending on the nature and severity of the infection. Cloxacillin is rarely indicated for the treatment of cystitis.
Maximum dose: 4 g/day.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Pneumonia:

>= 1 year to 18 years: 50 to 100 mg/kg/day orally divided every 6 hours.

What other drugs will affect Cloxacillin (Cloxamast)?

Some drugs may decrease the effects of Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) and prevent it from properly treating your infection. Before taking Cloxacillin (Cloxamast), tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:

• cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Colestid); or

• another antibiotic (for the same or for a different infection) such as erythromycin (Ery-Tab, E-Mycin, E.E.S., others), tetracycline (Sumycin, others), minocycline (Minocin), doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin, others), or any other.

Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. Use a second method of birth control while taking Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) to protect against pregnancy.

Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) increases the effects of methotrexate, and you may need a dose adjustment during therapy with Cloxacillin (Cloxamast).

Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) also increases the side effects of allopurinol (Zyloprim) and may cause a rash.

Probenecid (Benemid) increases the effects of Cloxacillin (Cloxamast). These drugs may be used together for this purpose; however, be sure your doctor is aware if you are taking probenecid. You may need a lower dose of Cloxacillin (Cloxamast).

• Probenecid because it may increase the risk of ampicillin's side effects
• Allopurinol because the risk of skin rash may be increased
• Anticoagulants (heparin, warfarin) or methotrexate because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Ampicillin (Cloxamast)
• Aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), birth control pills, or live oral typhoid vaccine because their effectiveness may be decreased by Ampicillin (Cloxamast)

Who should not take Cloxacillin (Cloxamast)?

If you have ever had an allergic reaction to another penicillin or to a cephalosporin, do not take Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) unless your doctor is aware of your allergy and monitors your therapy.

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, stomach or intestinal disease, or infectious mononucleosis. You may not be able to take Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) because of an increased risk of side effects.

If you are a diabetic, some glucose urine tests may give false positive results while you are taking Cloxacillin (Cloxamast).

Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is unlikely to harm an unborn baby. Do not, however, take Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.

It is not known whether Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How should I take Cloxacillin (Cloxamast)?

Take each dose with a full glass of water.

Take Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Cloxacillin (Cloxamast) should be taken at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night to keep the level in your blood high enough to treat the infection.

Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules. Swallow them whole.
